Prayers, Ponds and Praise

Ephesians 3:20 Now to Him who is able to do exceeding abundantly beyond all that we ask for or think, according to the power that works within us.

As I look and reflect on this verse, God shows me something...

3:20.

March of 2020. Everything stopped, shut down, quarantined, distanced, masked up, stayed home. But according to several articles and observations, people's hearts have reopened back up, reconnected to their faith, found peace in this crazy pandemic through attending virtual church services, opening the Word of God in their new found time, reading more...just seeking for hope. I believe more people started to pray once again.

Here is an article I found from the Pew Research Center.

https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2020/04/30/few-americans-say-their-house-of-worship-is-open-but-a-quarter-say-their-religious-faith-has-grown-amid-pandemic/

I know one thing for myself, my prayers became more intense, more specific. I started the year letting go of a few things with intention, in order to seek God more, to pray and follow His will for my finished manuscript and for my family, my son in particular.

God exceeds all my wildest imaginary scenarios.

God's abundance overflows.

~~~
So many years ago, in our old home on Verdugo, (we left because of a fire in 2003) one of my desires was to build a pond in our backyard. I love gardening, and who doesn't love the sight and sound of cool running water over rocks and glistening pebbles attracting birds and dragonflys.
Where we now live, somehow, we collected things, were given things...like huge boulders, like a pond liner, like a space under a tree that seemed perfect.
Can we do this, finally?
The three of us, in this space and time of staying home, created a backyard pond! I waited over 20 years hoping for one-- and it came in the midst of a pandemic.
Something else is happening too. Something only God can do, something miraculous and transformative.
My son and I are praying together.
A stubborn, self-admitted hard-headed, angry and distanced young man, my youngest son...in the midst of his own personal soul pandemic--is finding God and searching for the man God wants him to be.
Broken hearts can stay injured and unrepairable, thrown into the wasteland of regrets and pierced by the probes of unworthiness and demon accusations or they can be remolded, restored, resucitated and repurposed. God can and will do that if we seek Him.
Though we live under the same roof, he sends me a text...
Can we pray Mom?  I need to pray.
I text him one back. Of course.
He walks past his dad and I gather myself off the deep couch, apply my mosquito repellant and outside I meet him in his cigarette smoke and in his humble posture.
I take a breath of clean air and allow it to fill my lungs and then I step into his world, he leads the way, telling me he will begin.
And he does, and I know the smell of that smoke, but somehow I can't recognize it, I have to look up and see for myself that this is not a hazy dream, but I am hearing and witnessing a supernatural transformation ignited by years of prayers, prayers never snuffed out, but smoldering in God's perfect timing--
abundantly answered---exceedingly answered.
And he seeks to change, to be the man God wills for him, and he prays for those he loves and those who hurt him and for his mother. He makes peace with his past and pleads for his future, his future in 5 minutes, his future in 5 hours, his tomorrow.
He gives up the anger, again and again, knowing it could come streaming in at a flick of a switch, in a broken heartbeat. He fills the ending time in thanksgiving and resolve.
Who taught this boy...sorry, no,
Who taught this young man to pray like this?
Not me. He has avoided "church stuff" for years.
This is answered prayers. This is boulders being moved and placed in position so streams of Living Water can flow through and make a beautiful noise. This is a spot in life he's been placed in, though in heartache and self-realization, where God is building up a new beginning, a holy work.
We've now made this official. Every night before I head upstairs to bed, I will go outside and sit with him, in the memory of a recently smoked cig and the tattoed arms holding up his bent head in submission. I listen to him pray and he asks for God's guidance and strength for his healing in the most humble, straightforward conversation, as if he already asked God to meet us out here--as if he's done this many times before.
I look up from my own bent head in awe and wonder of a God who has taken His time with this one. What is being revealed through his waterfall tears and cascading prayers? -- Hope in a God of infinite possibilities when a mother continuously--exceeding and abundantly prays for her children.
Thank you God. I am overwhelmed with all you are doing right now. This is just the beginning of my son's healing journey. I pray right now for satan's demons to be banished from any attack on his spirit. He is Yours God, You have plans for his story. Thank You Lord, for redemption, the most beautiful word in the world. Your power works within us when we pray and In Jesus's Name I pray, Amen.
Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall
I turn the music up, I got my records on
I shut the world outside until the lights come on
Maybe the streets alight, maybe the trees are gone
I feel my heart start beating to my favourite song
And all the kids they dance, all the kids all night
Until Monday morning feels another life
I turn the music up
I'm on a roll this time
And heaven is in sight
I turn the music up, I got my records on
From underneath the rubble sing a rebel song
Don't want to see another generation drop
I'd rather be a comma than a full stop
Maybe I'm in the black, maybe I'm on my knees
Maybe I'm in the gap between the two trapezes
But my heart is beating and my pulses start
Cathedrals in my heart
As we saw oh this light I swear you, emerge blinking into
To tell me it's alright
As we soar walls, every siren is a symphony
And every tear's a waterfall
Is a waterfall
Oh
Is a waterfall
Oh oh oh
Is a is a waterfall
Every tear
Is a waterfall
Oh oh oh
So you can hurt, hurt me bad
But still I'll raise the flag
Oh
It was a wa wa wa wa wa-aterfall
A wa wa wa wa wa-aterfall
Every tear
Every tear
Every teardrop is a waterfall
Every tear
Every tear
Every teardrop is a waterfall
Every tear
Every tear
Every teardrop is a waterfall
Have Mercy
Matthew 5:7 "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy."
Equipped for Mercy
The USNS Mercy sailed into the Port of Los Angeles today. The 1000-bed ship will serve as floating hospital for non-Coronavirus patients.
"Mercy brings a team of medical professionals, medical equipment and supplies, all of which will act, in essence, as a `relief valve' for local civilian hospitals in Los Angeles so that local health professionals can better focus on COVID-19 cases,'' he said. "We will use our agility and responsiveness as an afloat medical treatment facility to do what the country asks, and bring relief where we are needed most.''
Mercy is a name of a huge ship. But really it is about the people, the jobs, the care, the courage, the do diligence of those placed on board to serve, bring healing and comfort to those recovering from other ailments and/or injuries.
Essential for Mercy
Our doctors and nurses, EMT's and various therapists and health providers are risking their own health and beyond by serving all the communities at large at this very moment in time across our country, around the world. They are working without enough protective equipment in this pandemic. The numbers are increasing. Quarantined patients are without their family and visa-versa.Nurses serve not only in the physical care, but in the emotional care of these patients. Who is caring for their anxieties, their mental and emotional health?
Just like after war, after 9-11, we may see a surge of PTSD in our health professionals.
Exacting Mercy
I saw this story today--had to share it.
https://www.nbclosangeles.com/on-air/restaurants-cater-meals-to-hospital-and-medical-workers/2336721/
The merciful:  "those who, through brotherly love, account another person’s misery their own; who weep over the calamities of others; who, out of their own property, feed the hungry and clothe the naked; who admonish those that are in error, inform the ignorant, pardon the offending; and who, in short, use their utmost endeavours to relieve and comfort others." ~ Erasmus, Dutch scholar and Christian philosopher, 1466-1536 A.D.
Lord, I pray that you equip us with your mercy to serve those in need around us, the wounded in spirit, the bed-ridden in anxiety, the broken, unable to catch their breath. Allow us to be essential in all our thoughts and deeds, in our daily stay-at-home schedules and plans within these dynamics and parameters because of this merciless pandemic. Father God, give us exacting mercy at the time most needed, patience and understanding for each other, and the will and mindset to pursue Your mercy and grace even more. Lord, Your redemption awaits us as Easter approaches, yet Your redemption already empowers us now. There are heroes among us, many in the spotlight and many undercover. However You choose to use us in this time, let us be obedient to Your calling and humble in our approach. Expand our gifts for the greater Good, and multiply Your servants to proclaim the Hope in a world shuttered from Your Light. Thank You Lord for Your mercy given to us, and we pray for You to be merciful again on those in need and the wisdom to embrace it. Amen
Sequestered or Sanctified?
Psalm 118:8 :It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man."
A lot transpires in a week. (since last week's post). Emptier shelves, Longer lines and minute by minute updates interrupt our stream of conscious causing us to reassess life.
Cancelled, postponed, shut down, off limits, unavailable. The anticipated events in our lives are deleted from the calendar.
Major and minor league sports, high school sports, concerts, conventions, meet-ups, church meetings, assemblies, public amusement parks and historical sites...even school!
The list goes on.
We are told to communicate virtually, isolate, hunker down, socially detach, board up the house...well, not quite that.
When we are told to shut it down, God reminds us to sanctify.
John 17:17 "Sanctify them in the truth; Your Word is truth."
When we are told to forget about doing this or that, God tells us to have faith.
Mark 11:22-24 And Jesus answered them, "Have faith in God. Truly I say to you, whooever says to this mountain, 'Be taken up and thrown into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
When we are told things are without precedent, unpredictable and the pressure is on, God gives us peace.
Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
God's is for us; His will and sovereign plan remain steadfast. He, the Lord is the same today, yesterday and tomorrow. We can go about our daily walk with Him in the midst of our side-lined days, our self-quarantine and cancellations.
God shows up. Always.
Will we?
Maybe you have abandoned plans to know God more. Maybe you have postponed, set aside that talk you needed to have with Him. Maybe your hurt and pride have become like a virus, a venom allowed to keep surging through your veins. It hardens the heart.
But God! He is our refuge! He remedies, redeems, revives us from ourselves, our sin, our apathy, our fear. For God is Love for our condition, our very critical condition if we do not recognize His sacrifice, accept His perscription for Hope.
Lord, A national and world-wide pandemic is a scary and very serious thing. This virus continues to mutate and move in ways we do not yet understand. Lord, I pray for those gifted to find ways to halt it, cure it, sequester it, be given grace and wisdom in the process. I pray for Your protection and for our patience during this outbreak. I pray for those most vulnerable. Encourage us Lord and guide us to encourage one another, serve one another and be creative in the ways we can do, be good to one another and continue to be about Your plan. May understanding and compassion, fellowship and furthering Your Gospel be foremost on our minds and hearts as we approach Passion Week and Easter morning. Lord change us, mutate us to transcend all that this world wants to destroy, All for Your Glory, Amen.
